Exclusive economic zone

Definition(s)
The Law of the Sea Convention establishes a special legal regime of the Exclusive Economic Zone, which is an area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea and which shall not extend beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. Provisions may concern the right and duties of the coastal state in this zone (exploitation, exploration - for purposes of scientific research for instance - conservation and management of the natural resources/marine environment), the rights and duties of other states in this zone.
